Phoenix, Arizona -- Every fourth Thursday of November, Americans across the country gather around the table to celebrate Thanksgiving — a time to give thanks, share a meal, and reflect on the blessings of the year. It’s a day filled with love, laughter, and of course… delicious food!

Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday — it’s a celebration of gratitude.

Families travel miles to be together. Communities organize food drives and volunteer to help those in need. And, as the night ends, many start preparing for another American tradition — Black Friday.

Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving — officially marks the start of the holiday shopping season. Stores open their doors early, offering huge discounts on everything from gadgets and fashion to toys and home essentials.

What started decades ago as a single shopping day has now turned into a weekend of deals, continuing online through Cyber Monday. For many, it’s not just about finding bargains — it’s also about supporting local businesses and getting a head start on holiday gift-giving.

Whether shopping in stores or online, the excitement of Black Friday brings people together in the spirit of giving. So, as Thanksgiving reminds us to be grateful for what we have, Black Friday invites us to share that joy through giving, celebrating, and spreading a little holiday cheer. Chandler, Arizona -- The Philippine Consulate Office is now officially open in Chandler, Arizona—marking a historic milestone for the Filipino American community. After more than a decade of lobbying, this long-awaited dream has finally become a reality.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last November 14, 2025, in Chandler, where Honorary Consul General Jenny Ho-Vijungco received overwhelming support from community leaders across Arizona.

The Consulate is now ready to serve, offering passport and visa processing, civil registration, notarial, legal services, economic diplomacy, and the continued promotion of our rich Philippine culture.

Jenny Ho-Vijungco is a visionary leader in real estate development, healthcare administration, and philanthropy. As head of Miranda Property Development, she has led transformative projects across Arizona.

She has also excelled in healthcare leadership, earning Joint Commission Accreditation for exceptional care. Her nonprofit, Project J.O.Y., inspired by her late father, Dr. Jesus Ho, supports medical missions in the Philippines and has built a village for 16 homeless families in Misamis Occidental.

"CWA-Led Picket Highlights Piedmont Airlines Workers’ Push for Improved Rights and Compensation"

Phoenix, Arizona - On Monday, October 28, 2024, Piedmont Airlines employees, supported by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), held a coordinated picket at multiple airport stations across the United States, including Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).

This action, spanning from 9 a.m. to noon, was aimed at drawing attention to employee demands for improved pay, safer working conditions, and respect for workers' rights. The picket was simultaneously conducted at several locations where Piedmont operates, such as Boise (BOI), Meadows Field (BFL), and others, totaling over ten airport locations.

According to a video statement from the CWA Bargaining Team https://vimeo.com/1023050053/aa41871837?&login=true, negotiations with Piedmont Airlines management took place on October 22-24, covering key articles like filling vacancies, hours of service, overtime, training, uniforms, holidays, vacation, compensation, benefits, and safety. The union reported only one tentative agreement on worker uniforms, with significant gaps remaining in areas such as vacation, benefits, and hours of service.

The picket is underscored by the recent third-quarter financial report from American Airlines, revealing a substantial pre-tax profit of $271 million and record quarterly revenue of $13.6 billion. Despite these figures, Piedmont Airlines' offer in the negotiations has reportedly increased by just $0.16 from the prior month. This increase was met with frustration from workers who have been advocating for "livable wages" as the 2018 Collective Bargaining Agreement nears its expiration on November 4, 2023.

Through this picket, the CWA and Piedmont workers hope to spotlight their demands for improved healthcare, a livable wage, and safe working standards. pmaa

Ryan, of Filipino descent but raised in the United States, is running for mayor in Mesa in the upcoming election. A former city council member, entrepreneur, community leader, father, and husband, Ryan's diverse experiences reflect his deep commitment to public service.

Ryan has matured into a responsible and honest public servant, dedicating his life to serving his constituents. He shared that understanding his roots has given him the focus and enthusiasm to enter politics. Ryan believes that whatever the Almighty has bestowed upon him should be returned to the community, which he feels deserves the best representation and resources. Throughout his career, Ryan has demonstrated a strong commitment to community leadership. He has actively engaged in various local initiatives, supporting economic development, advocating for educational improvements, and promoting cultural inclusivity.

AZ BATTLE OF TALENTS 2024!

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - The night unfolded with pulsating excitement at the grand opening of Arizona's local artists, showcasing their musical prowess inspired by the award-winning Filipino songwriter, Nonoy Zuniga.

This remarkable event marked the debut of a festive musical concert, meticulously produced by R3 Production LLC under the expert supervision of Richard Navarro, Robert Baysan, and Rene Gamboa. The Arizona Talent Search 2024 was aptly named the "Battle of Talents."

The venue for this extraordinary spectacle was the Saint Paul Church Auditorium in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona.

The spotlight shone on twelve distinguished Arizona local artists, each bringing their unique flavor to the stage. From Darwin Santos, the mesmerizing lead singer of The Voyager, to Macbeth Pascua, renowned as the Voice of Asia, and Miles King, Arizona's very own Rock Star Diva. Mabing Navarro graced the event as the Desert Diva.

Completing the ensemble were other local gems: Wilitez Porier, Mabel Gamboa, Liza Ibayan, Jac-Jac Alba, Tess Mirafuentes, Tina Estes, and Angel Gregorio.

The festivities kicked off in the morning with a talent search that spanned across lower divisions (ages 5 to 15 years old) and upper divisions (16 years old and above). The lower division boasted at least 5 groups and 4 individual contestants, while the upper division featured an impressive lineup of 14 individual contestants.

The panel of judges for this exhilarating contest included the dynamic Ms. Pia Moran, known for her comedic flair and body language finesse, alongside the Chief Executive Officer of Asian Media Network, President of TNT Arizona Radio, and Publisher of Viet Lifestyle Magazine, Ms. Thanh Mai Le. Last but certainly not least, the stage was graced by the presence of the multi-awarded artist and performer, Mr. Miloy Canete.

Before the eagerly awaited live concert at 6 in the evening, the air was thick with anticipation as the winners were announced. Each recognized talent added a new dimension to the evening's splendor. Hosting the event was the charismatic Mr. John Saavedra, an English/Literature teacher and former educator at the Education Department in Guam, joined by his co-host, the business owner of Homecare Services, Salad Master dealer, and the brains behind Baysan Production, Ms. Sharon Jane Baysan.

R3 Production LLC holds a fervent hope that this event not only brought joy and excitement to the audience but also served as a launching pad for future editions. The anticipation lingers for more talents to grace this stage in the coming years, turning the Arizona Talent Search into an enduring celebration of artistic brilliance. PMAA

TENSE STANDOFF UNFOLDS ON W. MIAMI STREET IN PHOENIX

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - In a quiet Phoenix neighborhood, chaos erupted today as a standoff ensued on W. Miami Street, involving a suspect who has been refusing to surrender to the City of Phoenix Police.

The situation began at approximately 1:00 pm when concerned neighbors reported a half-naked individual wielding a hammer, threatening both motorists and residents along the side streets. The suspect, only known as "EDDIE," retreated into his residence at 7654 W Miami Street, sparking a stand-off that has now surpassed the one-hour mark.

Police were quick to respond to the initial call around 12 nn, and urged nearby residents to vacate their homes to avoid any potential collateral damage during the confrontation. The suspect, allegedly armed and dangerous, has displayed erratic behavior, leaving law enforcement puzzled about the motive behind his actions.

To gain control of the situation, Phoenix Police fired a rubber bullet at the suspect's residence as a warning. Despite repeated pleas for surrender, "EDDIE" remains defiant, refusing to exit his home.

Authorities are now considering more forceful measures to apprehend the suspect. The situation remains fluid, with law enforcement surveying the area at 6:24 pm and utilizing a drone at 6:42 pm to ensure a strategic and safe approach before any assault is initiated.

Authorities also advised all residents in the area to vacate their homes immediately until the situation is deemed safe. The Phoenix Police are committed to resolving the standoff peacefully, but the suspect's uncooperative stance is pushing the authorities to take decisive action.

The more or less 8 hours of drama ended after EDDIE was arrested by the Phoenix Police inside his residence. PMAA

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - Maria Susan Casiño, more famously known as Pia Moran, warmly reminisced about her modest upbringing during a recent visit to businesswoman Wilitez Poirier’s residence in Glendale, Arizona. Despite not finishing school, Pia acknowledges the invaluable lessons instilled by her parents, emphasizing the importance of respect for elders and the modesty of hiding when visitors come over.

This November 2023, Pia embarked on her first journey to the United States, expressing joy and gratitude for the welcome reception she received from the Filipino-American communities in Chicago and Arizona. During her stays, the accomplished actress not only advocates for investments in Philippine real estate through Century Properties, but she also shared insights into her upcoming film, “Lola Magdalena,” directed by Joel Lamangan and scheduled release in December 2023.

“Lola Magdalena” holds a mirror to the harsh realities of life in the Philippines, shedding light on poverty and the lack of governmental support. Pia, driven by her advocacy for Filipino-American community involvement, encourages investments in properties such as condominiums and single-detached houses in Batangas Province.

Reflecting on her journey, Pia disclosed her earlier days as a mannequin model in Quezon City, expressing her fascination with the models she admired during window shopping. This fascination eventually led her to inquire about the modeling world, a decision that changed the course of her life. Tagged as “Miss Body Language” in the 80s, Pia’s promising career met a detour after a vehicular accident.

Accepting her fate, Pia underwent a challenging period, relying on alternative means to support her family and siblings. Introduced as a measure aimed at turf protection, the legislation has raised alarms within the healthcare community, particularly among CRNAs who fear it may impose unnecessary restrictions and supervision requirements. Such changes could lead to adverse effects, including reduced access to care, longer wait times, and increased costs for veterans seeking healthcare services.

The bill appears to deviate from the prevailing trend in state-scope laws, which generally recognize the ability of CRNAs to practice independently. Instead, H.R. 3347 seems to disproportionately favor physician anesthesiologists, raising questions about its underlying motives.

One of the primary concerns voiced by critics is the lack of substantial support from clinical or scientific evidence for the proposed changes. This has led to doubts about the bill's potential to address pressing healthcare workforce challenges and its potential impact on the VA's ability to recruit and retain CRNAs.

A recent hearing, featuring the President-Elect of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), further fueled the controversy surrounding H.R. 3347. PHOENIX, ARIZONA – In a poignant forum held at Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines, the memory of veteran journalist Percy Lapid Mabasa was honored, and his courageous commitment to truth-telling was celebrated. Percy, the third journalist to be tragically killed in the line of duty in 2022, according to UNESCO, and the second during the presidency of Bong-bong Marcos, as reported by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), left a void in the field of journalism that continues to be felt.

The event, titled "Keeping the Flame of Freedom: The Case Study of Percy Lapid," commenced with a heartfelt message from Roy Mabasa, Percy's younger brother. Roy shared the deep impact of losing a loved one who was not just a brother but also a beloved family member. "Iba pala ang pakiramdam kapag ang namatay ay kapatid mo na, or kasambahay o kasama sa pamilya," he reflected, highlighting the unique pain of losing someone so intimately connected.

Percy Lapid Mabasa, renowned for his fearless reporting, was remembered as a dedicated journalist, broadcaster, and radio commentator who consistently championed transparency and honesty in his work. His radio program, "Lapid Fire," became a platform where he fearlessly exposed cases of corruption and upheld the principles of ethical journalism.

Roy Mabasa reminisced about his brother's unwavering commitment to the truth. "Percy was a veteran journalist, a broadcaster, and a radio commentator. He was and always will be my inspiration. He was not afraid to tell the truth," Roy shared with pride. Percy's bravery in confronting corruption and standing up for the voiceless earned him the admiration and respect of many.

Tragically, Percy's life was cut short on the night of October 3 the previous year when he was gunned down by two assailants on a motorcycle at his own home. Despite this devastating loss, Percy's legacy lives on through the numerous followers and listeners who continue to express their longing for his voice on the airwaves.

"Ang dami-dami niyang taga-pakinig na hanggang ngayon ay nagte-text sa akin, nangungulila, nagpapahayag ng kanilang praises of sympathy at yung kanilang expression na matapang si Percy," Roy revealed, emphasizing the enduring impact of Percy's work on those who admired his bravery and dedication to journalism.

The forum was not just an opportunity for Percy's family to remember him but also a platform to discuss the critical issue of press freedom in the Philippines. Joining Roy Mabasa as a guest speaker was Ellen Tordesillas, a co-founder of VERA Files and a prominent advocate for media freedom. Her presence underscored the importance of protecting journalists and ensuring that their voices are not silenced in the pursuit of truth.

As the world remembers Percy Lapid Mabasa, this forum served as a reminder of the sacrifices journalists make to uphold the principles of democracy and accountability. Percy's legacy will continue to inspire a new generation of journalists to fearlessly seek the truth and keep the flame of freedom burning bright.

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - In the heart of the United States lies a land of growth and opportunity. Arizona, once a desert state, has transformed into a thriving hub, attracting people from all corners of the world. Over the years, the state has witnessed an incredible transformation. From a mere 200,000 residents in 1912, Arizona's population has swelled to over seven million today. Among the tapestry of cultures, Filipinos have established themselves as a vibrant community, second only to Mexicans.

With dreams of a better life, Filipinos made Arizona their home. This journey was not without its challenges. Adapting to a new land, they sought to meet their basic needs while embracing the promise of a prosperous future. One organization emerged as a guiding light amid this journey — the Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce of Arizona, PACCA.

"Phoenix, Arizona, is unlike the Philippines. It may not be as lively, but it's an ideal place for growth and self-discovery. I chose to develop my skills in the accounting sector, harnessing my financial expertise to contribute to both my career and the community," explains Edward Lago, current president of the Chamber.

PACCA's inception in 1994 marked a turning point. A collective effort by Filipino entrepreneurs birthed a platform that fostered unity and support.

"Our community thrives in various sectors — restaurants, health services, real estate, and more. But there was a void; we lacked a dedicated chamber of commerce. Thus, the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Arizona was born to nurture Filipino businesses in the region," says Leonardo Aromin, co-founder of PACCA.

This Chamber breathed life into the dreams of Filipino Americans, uniting them under a common purpose. The chamber's diversity became its strength, with members hailing from various ethnic backgrounds and industries.

"PACCA's diversity knows no bounds. From healthcare to law, from banking to accounting, we stand as a resource for every sector. It's not just about business; it's about giving back to the community," says Edward Lago.

"Our involvement extends beyond commerce. We coordinate with the Philippine Consular office during outreach events and lend a hand during community celebrations. Our efforts are amplified through collaborations with the Council of Filipino Organization of Arizona (COFAC), enriching the lives of those we serve," narrates Leonardo Aromin.

With the support of its growing membership, PACCA has achieved remarkable feats. From less than a hundred, its members now exceed 200, each contributing to the betterment of not only existing members but the entire Filipino community in Arizona.

As Arizona continues its journey of growth, PACCA stands as a beacon of empowerment, lighting the path for Filipino Americans to flourish, united by their dreams and their commitment to community. PMAA
